[Text] The Jammu and Kashmir Government has revoked the detention orders of five prominent political leaders of the state with immediate effect. These leaders are: Syed Ali Shah Gilani, ex-MLA [member of the Legislative Assembly]; Mr. Abdul Ghani Lone, ex-MLA; Maulvi Abbas Ansari; Professor Abdul Ghani; and Qazi Nisar Ahmed.

The All India Radio Jammu correspondent says that while no reasons have been officially given for revoking the detention of these leaders, the development is being viewed by observers as a step toward restoring the political process in the state.

Meanwhile, there is no report so far today of any violation of the Line of Control by the self-styled JKLF [Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front] activists. An official spokesman in Jammu said no activity could be seen even on the Pakistan- occupied Kashmir side of the Line of Control. The security forces are maintaining a strict vigil. In the Kashmir Valley also, there was no incident. Reports from Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, say about 500 JKLF activists were arrested by the security forces today.

[Hong Kong AFP in English at 1424 GMT on 30 March reports the following: "Five Kashmiri militants made it across the border into Indian-held Kashmir Monday afternoon, while police arrested march leader Raja Muzaffar, militant sources said. The symbolic crossing and subsequent arrest of Muzaffar, acting chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), apparently ends its adventure at the volatile border between the hostile neighbours India and Pakistan, observers said."]
